Consisting of vocalist/composer Nishla Smith and saxophonist/composer Emma Johnson, new folk/jazz duo – Night Porter – have released their fantastic four-song EP titled ‘Spaces‘; a collection of four songs inspired by various outdoor settings.
EP opener “Garden” is delightfully mellow with beautiful piano melodies and soft soulful saxophone dancing together as characterful vocals deliver nature-inspired lyrics. The theme continues with the following song “Trees” which introduces itself through tasteful piano melodies before being joined, once again, by heavenly vocals that add extra depth by skipping between solo and harmony-laden passages, making for a wonderfully rich sound that will soothe the listener. “Water” makes a slightly bolder first impression by beginning with a woodwind instrumentation. The slightly harsher sound soon moves aside for the vocals and piano which then take centre stage as the song the progresses. EP-closer “Buildings” maintains the tempo and acts as a magnificent bookend due, in our opinion, to the lyricism that beautifully contrasts with the EP-opener, allowing for a well-rounded EP that feels complete as a body of musical work in its own right.
