“Haze” by Joe Fox & The Frantics

First thing first: this song is a grower. It lures you in with its lo-fi fuzzy bass lines, gritty vocals, and subtle psychedelic background melodies, discreetly embedding themselves into your subconsciousness and inviting you to hit repeat again and again.

Opening in an unconventional way, this song makes its first impression via a tambourine shake. From here a guitar note plays briefly before being joined by a determined beat provided by the coupling of a scuzzy bass guitar and solid drum kit. The vocals then deliver the lyrics over the top of this, all the while the powerful bass frequencies give the song a plodding feel; in our mind’s eye we can picture some sort of behemoth trudging relentlessly forward, being utterly unstoppable. For comparison we’d point to ‘Do I Wanna Know’ by Arctic Monkeys, highlighting the way that the riff interacts with the drums, also creating a strong-paced marching song. All of this comes together to create a confident song from a band that knows what their sound is and deliver it with style.

“‘Haze’ is a song all about romance. Meeting someone new who just intoxicated you the moment you laid eyes on them. I think a lot of people have experienced wanting to just lose themselves in a new person and a new relationship. Even if you know it isn’t going to last it can be really liberating to live in the moment and not think about the future” – Joe Fox.
