Interview: Moon Walker

We enjoyed listening to your song “Light Burns Out”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
I wrote it on Daylight Savings, so the idea of the clocks turning back was in my head. The song has a very nostalgic vibe so I bet that the progression was already subconsciously informing the direction of the lyrics. It’s actually a funny story with the title. When I was writing chorus lyrics, I kept singing “the lights go down” but that’s an ELO song so I didn’t want to use it. I could not think of any other phrasing or verbiage so I just chose something phonetically similar. So that’s actually where the title comes from haha

We dig the music video too. What ideas went into making this? Are there any messages that you hope the video delivers?
Interestingly, the video was kind of an afterthought but it ended up being a really fitting accompaniment for the song. We filmed it on the same day as “The TV Made Me Do It”. Sean made the animation and we just set this light that we had rented to be changing colours. We put the camera on the tripod and filmed it in one take. It didn’t get nearly as much thought as “The TV Made Me Do It”, but somehow it evokes the nostalgic energy of the song perfectly.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
I would say our sound is rock. We listen to a lot of different stuff that is easily detectable in our music, but at the end of the day, we’re just two guys raised on rock n roll trying to make as much noise as possible with a guitar and a drum set. We have tons of influences though. Biggest ones would be Bowie, Supergrass, Talking Heads, T Rex, The White Stripes, Can, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, etc.

What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
Oh, man. Too many on the bucket list to name!! I guess I’ll make it easy and just throw this one into the universe: OPEN FOR THE ROLLING STONES ON THEIR UPCOMING TOUR. I think I feel most accomplished when I get to hear the mastered versions of our records for the first time. It sounds silly, but really that’s the only thing that makes me feel like my time and effort materialized into something valuable.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
Well, since I just said The Rolling Stones, I’ll pick someone else for this question. Maybe David Byrne or Radiohead. Or if we’re talking newer artists, I’ll say Måneskin.

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
I’ve been listening to “To Pimp A Butterfly” a lot lately. The new Danny Elfman and Trent Reznor song is incredible. New Billie Eilish, St. Vincent, Tyler, The Creator, Squid, and Sunglasses For Jaws records are all great. I’ve also been listening to a bunch of McCartney but that’s nothing new haha.
