Interview: Celestine Liu

We enjoyed listening to your song “Dance to the Rhythm”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
I really love dancing and I’ve always been wanting to create a song that is uplifting and inspiring and gives people a dance vibe. During the pandemic, I see many people suffering from isolation and depression, so I want to cheer them up with my bright and upbeat melody. In this song, I created a scene in a tropical forest and I want my listeners to feel the freshness and freedom in the jungle. I want people to realize that the secret to happiness is just that simple — everyone should simply forget their worries and dance to the rhythm, and that’s where my song title comes from.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
I would describe my voice as unique, as I I have a broad vocal range (from mezzo to soprano) and I can sing in many different styles (classical, pop, jazz, etc). This is because I have received more than 10 years of professional vocal training and I’m very confident with my vocal techniques. One of my biggest influences is Peggy Lee, as my understanding of jazz music mainly comes from her. Also, I’m indebted to my vocal teacher Elizabeth de Trejo, who is a world-renowned soprano and has taught me the original bel canto vocal techniques.

What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
My career highlight so far would be my album “Liunique”. This album contains my five original songs that span many different genres: Indie-pop, Jazz, EDM (Moombahton), and Classical. Since its release, my album has been well received on Spotify with 45K streams and 25K listeners in total. In the near future, I’m planning to create more new songs in collaboration with other musicians and get more live performance bookings. I really hope to sing my own songs on stage – that kind of experience can never be replaced by anything virtual.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
I would love to be the main support for Jay Chou, who is my all-time favourite musical artist. I’ve been listening to his music since childhood and his creativity and mastering of different music genres have had a significant influence on my musical taste. So my dream would be having a chance to perform with him live on stage.

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
I’ve been listening to the works of artists who have been trying to combine different musical styles in innovative ways. For example, recently I came across a song named ‘Paint the Clouds‘ by Far East Movement, and I was impressed by how the artist combines eastern and western pop music elements effortlessly. In general, I would recommend people to listen to music that is well structured and contains various elements and learn to appreciate the beauty of music.
