Interview: Voltanz

We enjoyed listening to your song “Leika”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
Leika” is about the end of summer, the end of a loving relationship and about dishonesty. It is not so much a literal description as it is description of feelings. The title is a fantasy name, it is the first thing that popped up. It sounds like the first dog in space (Laika) and a German camera (Leica). The song was originally written as a piano piece, which we later transferred to bass and guitar. Much later we added the synth parts. Finally, we recorded the vocals in several layers.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
We both grew up in the eighties listening to punk and new wave: The Cure, Sonic Youth, New Order, and later to bands like Interpol, Blonde Redhead, Sleaford Mods and Protomartyr  (check out our “inspired by:” playlist on our Spotify artist channel). Our music has an eighties pop sound with some rough edges like the occasional heavy guitar riff.

What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
We played in several bands since we were 15 years of age, mostly local. We never recorded music before, just played live. The new possibilities of digital home recording and the fact that we couldn’t play live due to Corona inspired us to record our music and add synths and effects that we didn’t use before. And we wrote some new songs during Corona. Our goal is to publish at least ten songs and two EP’s. Furthermore, we are practicing very hard to play our new sound live with some fellow musicians. We would like to play our music live in regional clubs or national festivals. And maybe even international.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
It is very hard to open for a famous band: fans are not there for you; it is a way to get experience and play for a lot of people. I think we would be more suited for a big festival like Noorderslag and Lowlands in The Netherlands or Glastonbury in England. We’re not so familiar with festivals outside of Europe. On the other hand, we like going to underground music clubs like Vera in Groningen, The Netherlands and would gladly play in clubs like that.

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
At this moment, Pat is listening to Pony Hoax from France, especially their single Antibodies. Lately Dan is into Ela Minus and Natalie Pernet.

We understand that you’ve also released a new single on the 1st August. What’s that song about and where can people listen to it?
Our new single is Lunar Surface. It is about a love relation which isn’t in balance anymore. You can hear it on Spotify here: “Lunar Surface
