We enjoyed listening to your song “Canaries”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
“Canaries” was written following a fleeting romance that had to end too soon. I then found a dying bird on the pavement and took it to our bassists house so the bird metaphor came from there (in regards to the bird, we didn’t know what to do and it just died and it was super weird). It also felt like people around me were trying to tell me what to do about this situation as though they were little warning birds that I just wanted to ignore.
I wrote it as a solo song originally but I’ve had a really talented band help me work on these recent releases and they’ve become more full bodied brash songs than before.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
Hmm always an awkward question, but I suppose somewhere in alternative/indie/folk. I’ve grown up with a lot of folk music and have moved into a more alternative style as I’ve gotten older. The Staves have always been a big inspiration to me but also bands from a range of genres like Sylvan Esso, Grizzly Bear and Big Thief. I’m a classically trained cellist so there’s usually some of that in my head when I’m writing, especially the European romantic composers like Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky.
What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
I got to play at BBC introducing live in London and Ronnie Scott’s in the past few years which has been really exciting! After these past two years with covid and gigs being cancelled endlessly, there’s a lot on the bucket list! I’d love to reach more people, collaborate with more people and travel around touring.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
Another tricky question, probably someone like Big Thief or Julia Jacklin.
What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
Recently I’ve been loving Tune Yards, LUMP, Johanna Warren as well as my band mates other musical ventures, Fang Jr, Jiminil and CATMILK. And yes I reckon others should be listening to all of them.
