We enjoyed listening to your song “207”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
Thank you – it’s so great you like it.
Stuart Moxham from Young Marble Giants, The Gist etc and Matthew go back a long way; at one point sharing a squat in Cardiff at…207 Cathedral Road – so that’s what inspired the title.
Stuart came over to Matthew’s place in Camberwell and they wrote it together over the course of an afternoon. It touches on those more innocent times when life seemed so full of possibilities but also a growing awareness that nothing stays the same, whether it be places, friendship, love. People also tell us it speaks to them during this COVID shitstorm.
If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
We reckon we cause an AI headache for Spotify algorithms. Some describe us as indie electro, some electro pop, some synth wave. But there’s plenty of guitars in there too!
We love 80s/90s music & sounds. We also listen to other genres like alt folk, indie rock & rnb. And because Sonya is a contemporary dancer (e.g. Punch Drunk) and actor (e.g. Danish Girl) we also get inspired by film and dance.
When and how did Two Sevens form as a band?
We formed a few years ago. Paul heard some of Matthew’s tunes and thought he could make something of them! We met Sonya through Laurence, a photographer & video maker; Laurence now directs the band’s videos, along with Greg from Oh Kestrel Films.
What have been band highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
It’s such a cliché but it’s that moment when you realise that people other than friends and family are listening to and loving your music. And our album launch at Notting Hill Arts Club was pretty special.
We’d love to provide the soundtrack to a Ridley Scott film-or a modern dance piece.
If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
We couldn’t agree on one headline act we’d most like to support-but we’d all love to play at Meltdown!
What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
There are so many unbelievable bands and artists we love; along with YMG, we’re currently listening to The Weeknd, Hot Chip, Sleeper, Chvrches, Twist Helix, Niki & The Dove, Crystal Fighters, Taxi Girl, St Vincent, Hot Since 82, the Cardigans…
Thank you – Matthew, Sonya & Paul
