Interview: SIENNE

The wonderful band, Sienne, from Liverpool answered a few questions from us about their debut EP, music career highlights, and future dreams. Read all about them below.

Your six-track debut EP, “We All Look to the Same Sky”, is your latest release. What inspired the EP title and what themes are there in the songs?
It’s an EP that follows the journey from the inception of the band up until now. The track listing follows all the highs and lows that we feel mirror life.  When writing the closing track, the lyric ‘We All Look to   The Same Sky’ seemed to personify the journey of the EP as a whole, but it has also taken on new meaning given the climate over the past 12 months around the world and coming together, standing strong.

What was the process like writing and recording the EP? What did you enjoy about creating it?
Pretty much as soon as we started the band, we began writing and quickly had plenty of ideas between us. The first 2 tracks ‘Where Is Home?’ and ‘Coming Alive’ were recorded in December of 2019 when there were no restrictions, however once the difficulties of Covid kicked in, we had to become a bit more creative. Luckily all of us have individual studio set ups at home so we were able to all contribute ideas and collaborate remotely. As soon as we could, we were straight in with our producer Alec Brits at The Cabin. The frustrations of not being able to get together to write tunes made it even more exciting to get in the studio and Alec’s contributions really help shape the EP into what it’s become.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
People have given various different answers in trying to describe our sound and we put this down to the fact that we all have our own influences and flavours that we bring to the table during the writing process. We’ve been compared to Manic Street Preachers, The Killers and Noel Gallagher as an over-arching sound but we like to think that when you delve a bit deeper in the EP, there’s more variety within the sound than first meets the eye.

What have been band highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
Due to the circumstances of this year we’ve not been able to do what most bands get to do when they start, which is gig. Obviously, we can’t wait to do so but we feel we’ve adapted to the situation by approaching the releasing of music slightly differently. It’s been quite an exciting process exploring different avenues and hopefully when we can get out there and gig, this will have given us a solid foundation.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
Haha, we’ve had this chat before and we agreed on the dream of Queen with Bowie and Lorde… then we sobered up and agreed that getting to share the stage with our hometown brothers Red Rum Club would be an amazing night that we hope to orchestrate as soon as we can.

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
We are huge lovers of what Nothing But Thieves are doing, as well as our mates Venus Demilo, and there loads of new material coming out from this hiatus in the live scene as well. We share a management roster with some fantastic acts like La Club Royale and Columbia. We’ve also got some hopefully collaborations coming soon with some of our favourite acts.
