Interview: Michael Baker

You have just released your new album, “Home Come You Sleep” deluxe edition. What inspired the album title? And what themes run through the album?
As someone who struggles to not be a night owl and also not to be up at the break of dawn… this is a question to those who are able to sleep. It’s a song for the minds that stay ticking through most of the days.

What was the writing process for the album like? Are there any particular memories of writing and recording the album that you think will stand out in your mind when you look back on it in the future?
Lockdown hit just as my second album ‘Salt’ came out. My tours were all cancelled and I found myself at home not gigging for the first time. I already had my next album planned and had picked the tracks with producer Luke Potashnick for what is now going to be my 4th studio album. With ‘How Come You Sleep‘ I began the process of finding and recording demos of the songs I had in- between. This whole album for me almost feels like a collection of my favourite songs that I’d never managed to get onto an album yet I always played during my solo sets.

I lived with my bandmate, multi-instrumentalist, producer and very good friend Andrew Stuart Buttle and before we knew it we had delved into 8 songs that sounded like an album. It really feels like a moment special moment captured and the centre of me as a songwriter.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
I never really know how to answer this question. You’ll have to decide that yourself. But as for my influences, during lockdown I have also really got into making mixtapes of my favourite artists on my Spotify page. From Big thief to Sufjan Stevens, JJ Cale even to Chris to Burgh, Wilco, Bon Iver, Alice Phoebe Lou, Charles Watson. The list is endless… It’s been so amazing to do and has re-ignited the spark that made me become a songwriter in the first place.

What have been your music highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
I managed to tour Europe in November 2019 with the full 6 piece band for 3 weeks. I organised it myself & everything just worked so perfectly It was really a beautiful thing that I won’t forget 🙂

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
I’m Completely obsessed with Sylvan Esso At the moment so perhaps them?

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
Big Thief, Addrienne Lenker, Sylvan Esso, A.K. Patterson, Jack Tyson Charles, Charles Watson, Moon Panda. Too many to name really so here are just first ones who came to mind today!
