Interview: Sunstinger

Hello! We understand that you have a new EP out, titled ‘Beyond The Frame’, and we’ve heard the song ‘All My Friends Are High’ from it. What is the story behind this song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the both song title and the overall EP title?
All My Friends Are High’ is a pretty chilled out song for us. We wanted to add that vibe to the end of the EP. It was written the day before we went into the studio and was last minute. Were happy with how It turned out. At at the time it seemed a little different from our usual intense style but it definitely played a huge part in how the EP was shaped and the direction we have moved in sound wise in our latest recording sessions.
The song is about the death of a party at 7am. We tried to capture that feeling. I think that’s why it fits so well at the end of the EP.
The title ‘Beyond The Frame’ is taken from the term ‘the perfect frame’. Something I studied at college.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
Its pretty loud and intense. It does get the shoegaze tag. Which is strange because we never really set out for it to sound that way. But people are into it and not much people around here are doing what we are so its pretty cool to be different.
We are all into different music so I cant speak for everyone.. it ranges from bands like The Chameleons and New Order to bands like Ride and Diiv.

What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?
It still feels like its early days for us. Just before the pandemic hit things were really starting to pick up for us. We were pulling large crowds to shows and it felt like something special was about to happen. We have kept active though so hopefully we can just pick up where we left off.
The pandemic has made me realise how much I miss festivals. Getting some cool festival slots next summer is something we hope to look forward to.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
Probably Slowdive for me. Just so we can get some free tickets. I’ve never managed to see them live yet so two birds one stone!

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
I’ve went back and started listening to some older stuff like Galaxy 500’s album ‘Today’ and some Pale Saints stuff. I was listening to Rides album ‘Nowhere’ a lot at the time of recording this actually.
In terms of local music there are some cool bands bringing some great stuff out just now. Our drummer Nick’s other band ForeignFox are good friends of ours and have recently been releasing some great stuff.
Another hand full of Scottish bands to check out would be Plasmas, Post Ironic State, Domiciles, T-A and Jupiter Strange.
