Interview: Montana Sharp

Hello. We enjoyed listening to your song “Power”. What is the story behind the song and how did you create/write it? Also, what inspired the song title?
Thanks! That’s very kind. The story is about myself at 21 years of age (I’m 24 now) wondering why my relationships and friendships keep following a similar pattern. I came up with the piano line first and the song really wrote itself from there. The song title was inspired by my university requirements! It was my third-year recital and I had already submitted a set list which included a song called P.O.W. The Uni doesn’t allow you to change songs once submitted, I changed my mind about the song, so I decided to cheat the system and write “Power” instead.

We understand that there is also a music video for the song. What inspired the video and what ideas went into making it? Is there a message that the video carries too?
I really wanted the protagonist to be a very strong and clear character. I worked with a production company called Majella Productions, and presented them with the idea of a superhero character, but they advocated for the Queen of Hearts to wonder through the maze that is her love life. I thought it was genius and so fitting for the story. There’s no singular message within the music video. Some might find it disturbing, some might find it empowering, some might find it sad, so it’s really open to interpretation. I try not to push my views onto people within my music, I just like to make people feel validated in any sense.

If you had to describe your sound, how would you do so? Furthermore, what artists (or other sources) do you cite as influences?
I would describe it as James Bond meets Disney meets Classic Rock. Its epic, classic, and cinematic, designed to make you feel like the main character in your movie. There are many artists that have influenced me; Alanis Morrisette, Sia, Beyonce, AC/DC, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Dorothy, Carole King, Queen, Christina Perri, P!nk, I could go on and on and on!

What have been career highlights so far? And what is on your bucket list that you’d want to achieve?

Having a premiere in the Rolling Stone Magazine was pretty darn cool! My first single also got some recognition some Aussie legends so that had me super happy. My bucket list is Eurovision. Now that I’ve put that in writing, I’ll start manifesting it.

If you could be the main support for any living artist, who would that be for and why? Alternatively, what would be your dream live booking?
Alanis Morrisette because she is my musical idol. She’s been a huge inspiration on a song-writing level, and I also think she’s an extremely academically and emotionally intelligent human being.

What artists have you been listening to? Additionally, who should others be listening to?
I’ve been listening to Joss Stone. I’ve also been listening to a few tracks off of Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album and I’m seriously blown away, she’s great. However, everyone should be listening to POWER by Montana Sharp ;). I hear that the chick is a bit weird but the song is good!
