Interview: Saachisen

Hello. How has 2024 been for you?
Hi! I would say this year has been full of learning and new experiences. My highlight was playing my first ever solo show overseas, when I was invited to the Indian Embassy of Berlin to perform in my own, sold-out concert! My other live highlights include playing a Sofar Sounds for International Women’s Day in Bristol and topping off the year at the Southbank Centre. In between shows I spent the summer at a production course, and I’m really looking forward to putting my new skills into practice next year.

In your own words, how would you describe your sound and style? Are there any artists that you would cite as influences?
My songs are emotive and lyric-centric, with the music drawing influences from my Western and Hindustani classical background and years singing in choirs. Choral music as a genre opens up such beautiful, haunting harmonic spaces that inspire me, and I also love to perform on real pianos and incorporate live strings in recordings and gigs. One of my favourite bands growing up was Dry the River, whose sound prominently features a violin. Though they’re not making new music anymore I always find myself going back and re-listening to their albums.

Is there a story behind your song “If You Knew What I Was Thinking”?
“If You Knew What I Was Thinking” is really born of a combination of life experiences rather than any one story or person. I wanted to focus on the highs of having a crush and the boundless joys of daydreaming, rather than any of the sadness that comes with knowing a relationship is out of your grasp – for now! Prior to this, my releases leaned more towards ballads rather than bright and upbeat, so it was very fun to explore that side of myself and my songwriting.

You recorded “If You Knew What I Was Thinking” at Abbey Road Studios – what was that experience like?
I’ve been back to Abbey Road a few times now and it’s always exhilarating to stand on those front steps and be in a building where so much music history has been made. Most of those times has been working with members of the Abbey Road Institute, who are well on their way to becoming the best engineers in the business. I feel incredibly lucky to have had these opportunities as a musician and end up with the highest quality recordings I could have dreamed of.

What have been highlights of your music/artist career so far and do you have any plans for the year ahead that you would like to share with us?
I’ve had so many extraordinary moments on my journey, including being recognised by platforms like the International Songwriting Competition, attending my first awards show having been nominated for something previously won by Charli XCX, and performing to thousands of people at Pride in London in Trafalgar Square. In 2025 I’m unbelievably excited to be performing onstage with Tom Odell for Roundhouse London’s inaugural Songwriting Circle. It’s definitely going to be a career high and I’m beyond honoured to be singing with an artist I’ve been listening to since my teens!

What artists and albums have you been listening to?  Who would you recommend that others see live and listen to on record?
I love soundtracks because of their orchestral, cinematic feel, and especially love listening to them while I work my day job as a firmware engineer. The one I’m particularly enjoying right now is Arcane Season 2 which is full of cool tracks like “Renegade” (with Indian woman rapper Raja Kumari, who wrote in some tabla beat counting that sounds epic) and “Fantastic” (by King Princess, which has beautiful understated violin parts.) I’ve also been listening to Tom Odell’s album live from Union Chapel which is absolutely stunning. It features a full choir and you can feel the passion in the live performance so strongly. It makes me even more excited to join him at the Roundhouse in April!
