London-based, multi-instrumentalist Jessie Phelps has been steadily building her discography, with 2024 seeing three singles released to further grow it. This song immediately caught our attention with its alt-rock-pop/melodic-grunge style and a vocal style that, to our ears, evokes some of The Pretty Reckless’ material. The catchy hooks and slightly off-beat chord progression creates a memorable song that deftly balances the rock and grunge influences with a melodic approach that is neither too heavy, nor too pop-leaning, thereby creating a superb song that should be popular with a wide audience.
Though clocking in at over five-minutes in duration, this song doesn’t feel long: this is a testament to the melodic hooks that Jessie Phelps delivers along with an impressive singing style that demonstrates character, power, and range. These vocals deliver the lyrics brilliantly and sit perfectly in the mi, which brings us on to our praise of the mix and production quality: lately, we’ve heard some songs that have far too overpolished in terms of production quality or, at the contrasting end of scale, drastically need more refinement – Jessie, however, exemplifies that sweet spot in this song where the production has a dose of rock grit to it without losing any clarity, whilst also resisting the temptation to make the song too polished and pop-leaning. For us, at least, this song absolutely succeeds in achieving a warm and perfectly-balanced alt-rock-pop/grunge sound.
Kick off the new year in style by giving this song a listen and remain attentive for future releases from Jessie too.
