Initially conceived in Denmark, Disease Illusion’s members now extend across Italy, Denmark, and England and continue to deliver their death metal sound with the release of their third studio album, of which “Plastic Ocean” is the title track.
Whilst we’re naturally cautious with the use of AI technology, including with music videos, the message of this song and video justifies the video as it highlights the ways in which humanity has been destroying aquatic habitats globally in the pursuit of profits and convenience, with less thought given to the biological health of living organisms, water quality and, in a full-circle way, ourselves as humans that equally rely upon water.
A heavy-yet-melodic hook introduces the song along with the opening lyric of “I’m in the ocean but I still can’t drown” which makes a bold statement whilst instantly demanding our attention. The song then uses emotive lyrics, delivered in a gritty and angsty vocal tone that resonates with the song in the way that it almost sounds like someone losing their voice after pleading with apathetic bystanders to change their destructive ways, which further drives home the video’s visual message.
Disease Illusion state that the song “stands as a poignant metaphor critiquing our ecosystem’s plight, compared to an ocean besieged by plastic, wherein humanity strives to swim against all odds. ‘Plastic Ocean’ serves as a clarion call against ecological degradation.” . Whilst, from a musical perspective “the single mirrors the current environmental crisis, blending a compelling narrative with the band’s robust and unyielding sound.”
A powerful song and video that is well-worth a watch and listen and one that should pique the interest of metal fans who, subsequently, should then check out the band’s full third album.
