Interview: Lucy Starr

Hi, Lucy. How has 2024 been for you?
Hi! It has been a great year! I think 2024 has possibly been the busiest year of my life, especially for music! I released 3 original songs and have been lucky enough to get a lot of support from people including radio play from BBC Radio Merseyside and iHeart Radio etc! I also got featured in Liverpool ECHO and my single ‘Pull The Rug’ hit #1 on the aBreak58 charts, music’s leading platform for indie artists! I did a lot of performing around the North West. In summer, I played at The Cavern Club and also Tramlines Festival in Sheffield. I have been lucky enough to collaborate with very talented producers and artists and I have met some amazing people!

Are we correct in thinking that you’re a full-time musician? Where are you based and how can people support you and your music?
I am originally from East Riding of Yorkshire but I now live in Liverpool!
I have been singing my whole life but this has always been alongside my studies and a full time office job. The goal and dream was always to do music full-time one day but it seemed out of reach and I was nervous to take that step. As of October 2024, I am now indeed a full-time musician and it has been such a dream come true! My original music is on all major streaming platforms and I am very active on social media, especially Instagram as @lucystarrmusic

In your own words, how would you describe your sound and style?
My original sound started as very ethereal/ folk/singer-songwriter style inspired by the early works of Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift etc. In 2024, my sound shifted more towards an energetic indie rock/alternative style with electric guitar and very honest and sometimes quite sassy lyrics! All the songs are about loss in some way, mainly about the ending of a romantic relationship.

Are there any artists or styles that you’d cite as particular influences on your own music?
I would say that Avril Lavigne, Florence and The Machine and Paramore definitely inspired my indie rock sound. My earlier work is inspired by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran!

We understand that “Cut Me Down” is your most recent single.
What meanings does the song have and what was the songwriting process like?

I wrote Cut Me Down in the days following a very difficult breakup. The song is about reflecting upon a relationship with someone who is detrimental to your health and likes to ‘cut you down’ and make you feel bad about yourself. It was a toxic relationship and I think it’s important to raise awareness about these things so that people can get the support that they need and leave this person safely. It was a really difficult time in my life but I found the writing process very cathartic and it is about not being afraid to speak out about your experiences and to advocate for yourself. It also focuses on how your body can tell you that you are not in the right relationship.

What have been highlights of your music/artist career so far and do you have any plans for the year ahead that you would like to share with us?
I would say that the highlights have been getting featured in Liverpool ECHO, doing a live session on BBC Radio Merseyside, playing at Sofar Sounds, Tramlines Festival and The Cavern Club and hitting #1 on aBreak58 music. Also being able to quit my office job and be a full time musician! I am very lucky to be able to say that! My plans for the year ahead are to keep releasing original music and gigging in different cities! I would also like to collaborate with artists!
