Makenzie could, potentially, draw comparisons to the likes of Peter Gabriel or David Bowie with both the musical creativity and fun visual style that is embodied within the music video that accompanies this wonderful song.
“Anémone” immediately begins with Makenzie’s superb voice before additional instruments enter the mix bringing with them an immensely catchy rhythm and a subtle, textured sound over which Makenzie’s vocals float as they take centre-stage to deliver the lyrics. Unfortunately for myself, I’m not fluent in French (and forever wish my compulsory, state-education French lessons were much more engaging when I was a school) though not knowing the lyrics or narrative adds a certain charm and, arguably, understanding the lyrics then removes the self-interpretation can have. Then again, knowing the lyrics may equally add another dimension to the song that I wasn’t previously aware of.
Focusing again on the song itself, Makenzie adds a very early middle-eight just after the first minute, which then keeps the listener on their toes as she constantly adds different phrases and elements throughout the song, resulting in an ever-evolving, though still familiar, song that has already become a favourite of mine (and, I hope, becomes a favourite new discovery for you).
Finally, the video itself is a joy to watch as Makenzie changes outfits and styles throughout from a Greek goddess-esque outfit, to a colourful art-rock floral-scientist outfit, to (potentially) an more typically worn outfit that features flamboyant cusps. Footage is then interspersed with a choreography that highlights the paradiddle-esque rhythm of left-right-left-left, right-left-right-right which drummers may particularly pick up on and enjoy. A finishing touch is then the inclusion of an incredibly fluffy dog which may be somewhat of a curveball, but then again, I can only see positives of this.
An immaculate piece of art, both visually and musically, and quickly a personal favourite. Makenzie is an artist whom continues to thrill and intrigue and I am excited to see what 2024 brings for her.
