“2020” by Roxercat

Nashville-band, Roxercat, have been on our radar now with a variety of strong songs in their repertoire that have caught our attention. This song was released in March 2023 though, despite our best intentions, we’re only just sharing this with you now – though we emphasise that the wait is worth is because like all good music, it is timeless and remains a strong release by the band.

Opening with an ethereal theremin (or theremin-esque sound via a lap steel guitar) the song carefully builds with layers of acoustic guitar, warm bass tones, and atmospheric cymbal hits that hint towards prog-flavoured territory, possibly with elements of Rush, Yes, and Pink Floyd in some sense. The song then takes a rockier edge with tasteful lead guitar bursts working alongside the solid foundation laid by the percussion and bass. The bass then steps forward to deliver some wonderful lead embellishments before the vocals join the song, which then take the song in a more classic blues-rock direction, thrilling any rock fans with this sonic journey that incorporates a range of musical influences skilfully into one fantastic song.

With an equally creative music video, generated by AI, this makes for a superb listening – and viewing – experience where the listener/viewer can really immerse themselves in the band’s art (both sonically and visually). As the band say: ‘The song 2020 is my musical depiction of that year. It started off great with high hopes and quickly descended into an unprecedented time of chaos. I consider this to be our “fantasia” or “Homer’s odyssey”‘.
